Dragon Ball Z is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. I first experienced it in high school, but if I had been of an elementary school age, I can guarantee that along with pretending to be superheroes and G.I. Joes on the playground during recess, we would have thrown in the Z Fighters. I’d have run around that playground shouting Kamehameha and arguing the effects of my attacks until I was blue in the face. Of course, doing that in high school would have branded me as an even larger nerd than I already was, so it’s probably for the best that I refrained. Read the full story

I moved to California during the summer of 1997, the summer immediately prior to my freshman year of high school. My bedroom was pretty awesome back then, with a built in corner desk for my computer, and a great entertainment area for my TV and consoles. Some of my fondest memories in that room happened when everyone else was asleep, and the lights were off. Yes, a young teenager, alone in a dark room with access to the Internet and a TV. It should be obvious that I did what anyone in my situation would have done: watched TV, hung out on IRC, and played video games. Read the full story

Just moments ago, Adult Swim made an announcement on Twitter. “Attention Toonami Faithful: We heard you. On 05.26.12 #ToonamisBackBitches.” Now, when I glanced at Twitter and saw this news, I absolutely went crazy, as I used to watch Toonami back in its heyday. Finally, another generation of kids and fans will get the chance to watch some of the amazing shows we used to watch when we came home from school. Honestly, who wasn’t a fan of Dragon Ball Z, and the other series that made Toonami great?

Last night, as my wife and I were preparing to enter the sovereign realm of Morpheus, the anthropomorphic personification of dreams, I voiced a thought. I turned to her and said, “You know why Star Wars is definitively not science fiction? The time between the Old Republic era and the Trilogy era was what…3-6 thousand years? Why was there absolutely NO technological advancement in a period of at least three millenia? You see no progression or advancement over the course of those millenia in Star Wars. Star Trek shows you how species and cultures advance over the course of decades or centuries, while Star Wars can’t even be assed to update it by millenia!” My loving wife response to me, “Midichlorians are science,” with a troll’s glint in her eyes. Here we are friends, the end of Spidey-Month. I’d like to take a moment to thank all the writers and artists from Spidey history, for it was their stories that inspired this month and my love of the characters. As such, let’s talk about the essentials, the best of the best in those stories. As always, these are my opinions, so please accept them as such and check out these great tales.

I heard it said that a great super hero is how well you can mix him with other characters. In Spidey’s long history, he’s teamed up with a lot of different people, both within the Marvel universe and outside it. As such, I feel that I should talk about his best team-ups. Keep in mind, these are what I enjoyed the most for character interaction and significance, not a countdown, nor a complete list. If I listed all the team-ups Spidey did, I’d be writing all night.

While it’s possible to talk about every Spidey game, I personally look at the Spidey franchise as starting in the PS1 days. So, since I’ve played every game since then, here’s my mini-review/overview of all of them.

By this point, it’s kind of a given that while Norman Osborn is Spidey’s greatest foe, Venom will probably always be his most popular foe. But really, who or what is Venom? Villain, anti-hero, monster, parasite? The fact is, Venom is a lot of different people, and yet the same all the time. But, like a lot of Spidey’s villains, he’s had good times and bad times as far as depictions go.

I always find it funny when something becomes popular outside of its place of origin. Hell, people in the US have managed to make some anime so insanely popular when it was pretty darn average in Japan. So turnaround is fair play when it comes to Spider-Man. Marvel’s wallcrawler has a huge fan following in Japan, and it often resulted in very interesting and original interpretations.
