When I thought of doing the TBBYNHO series, I was listening to Circle Jerks. To be more specific, I was taking a walk while listening to Teenage Electric, and I thought to myself, “More people need to listen to this band.” You’ll never know how difficult it was for me to resist putting Lemon Party as the article image for this piece, but by mentioning it I either made you think about it, or made you Google it, and I am content. I’m willing to bet that you’ve heard of the band Rancid, especially if you listened to alternative stations in the 90′s when they started hitting it big on the radio. I’m also willing to bet that some of you, though not nearly as many, have heard of Operation Ivy. To bring the rest of you up to speed, Operation Ivy was a short-lived late-80′s band that served as one of the major influences behind the punk revival of the 90′s and the ska-core movement. How does that relate to Rancid? Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, two of the core members of Rancid, were two of the core members of Operation Ivy, with a man named Jesse Michaels at the helm. The Bouncing Souls have one of the most apropos band names I’ve ever heard. With a distinctive sound, listening to The Bouncing Souls gives me an exuberant feeling that makes me want to smile, laugh, dance, and just move around in general. If you ever see me while I’m driving, and I’m bouncing around, slamming my hands against the steering wheel like it’s a drum kit, and singing along to something at the top of my lungs, there’s a damn good chance that it’s The Bouncing Souls I’ve got blaring through my car speakers. One of our goals here at Marooners’ Rock is to cover more than just video games; we want to cover movies, TV, music, comics, and more. A friend dubbed it “Transmedia.” Well, it’s time to make good on that goal. My personal contribution to help kickstart it is a weekly series called “The Best Bands You’ve Never Heard Of.” This new series will try to open up our readers to new sounds they may otherwise never have heard. Granted, not all of these are going to be overwhelmingly rare; some of them may have even achieved minor mainstream success. Read the full story

Now, wait a minute. Before you start haphazardly dogpiling me with scorn, give me a chance to make my case. Let me assure you, this will not be about bands like Dashboard Confessional, Bright Eyes, My Chemical Romance, The Get Up Kids, etc. These bands are a perversion of what Emo was at its origin, and are not at all representative of its glorious roots. Did that get your attention? Are you now asking yourselves, and me, “If those shitty-ass bands aren’t representative of real Emo, what is Emo?” I’ll tell you what Emo is, and what Emo was: fucking hardcore. Read the full story

When I was a kid, I was restricted to the music my parents would let me listen to: 50s & 60s rock & roll and classical. Don’t get me wrong, I loved (and still love) that music, but I needed more. As I neared my teens, I discovered grunge, alternative, and more; I replaced The Zombies with Soundgarden, Wagner with Oasis. Then, in my fifteenth year of life, I moved to California with my mother and discovered the music that I would most closely identify with for the next 10+ years: Punk. Read the full story

The mid-90′s produced some of the best music in the history of mankind. I know, a bold statement, to be sure, but a true and valid statement nonetheless. One of the bands that, in my opinion, really epitomizes the excellence of this era in music is the British alternative-rock band, Bush.

I have been sick (on and off) the last two weeks, so Netflix is becoming one of my good friends. Last night I was feeling kind of low energy, but I wanted to watch something a bit faster paced. I know some of you are looking at the title like… seriously?? – I assure you, I am NOT talking about the film co-staring Johnny Depp, though, that was actually a pretty good movie if you haven’t seen it. But I digress, and this is something I wish to stay on topic for.

Tron: Legacy hits theaters in just 10 days. For most people, the soundtrack is a big draw and their only incentive to go and see it. Why? Because it is done by the legendary Daft Punk. Today, the official soundtrack hits store shelves, so it’s only fitting that the music video for their track Derezzed premiered on MTV.com.
