Review: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (PS3)

If you ever meet me, you will know that one of my great loves is the art of literature. I’ve written my fair share and read far more than I probably should have. And one of the greatest pieces of literature from Asia is Journey to the West, the tale of the T’ang monk Tripitaka’s journey to India to bring back the sutras of Buddha, and his bodyguard and disciple, the Monkey King, as well as their allies. So when I heard that Ninja theory, story-driven developers of Heavenly Sword, were making a game based on it, I was naturally excited. But does it work as a game?

Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

When I was but a wee lad, I found great joy in my Atari 2600, NES, Commodore 64, and more. When my grandmother sent me a SEGA Genesis bundled with Sonic the Hedgehog for my ninth birthday, I became a SEGA man. I still owned and played other consoles and platforms, but my heart and soul belonged to a little blue fuzzball in red hightops. Even to this day, if I have to choose between playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog or playing Super Mario Bros., I will almost unerringly choose to play Sonic the Hedgehog. This is the depth of my fandom. With this in mind, you can understand my despair through years of atrocious Sonic games (with, to be fair, one or two emeralds in the rough), and my sheer elation during the leadup to Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Review: Burn Zombie Burn (PC)

I like zombies. I love killing zombies – un-killing them? Re-killing them? Best not to think too hard on that one. Burning zombies is also a plus. Burn Zombie Burn is trying to appeal to me with these ingredients by imitating so many top-down zombie destruction simulators that have come before it. The game uses a specific mechanic to try and keep things fresh – lighting zombies up without destroying them is beneficial, so long as you can keep Bruce, the Elvis-like, jive-talking hero, alive.

Review: Plants vs. Zombies (XBLA)

For months I’ve been hearing people on Twitter and other social networking sites singing the praises of Plants vs. Zombies by PopCap Games. As a person who isn’t too into the tower defense genre, I avoided it like the plague. Up until a week and a half ago, I was convinced that PvZ was another one of those games trying to cash in on the zombie craze that’s been going on right now. If it wasn’t for the delightful demo that’s currently available on Xbox Live, I’d probably still think people were insane. While the demo is great for giving people a feel on what the full game is about, it doesn’t do it justice.

Review: Drawn Dark Flight (PC)

Back in August I had the chance to attend a press conference for what was, at the time, known to me as Drawn 2. Having played the original Drawn on PC prior to the meeting, I was already blown away by the series and had high expectations for the sequel. After playing Drawn: Dark Flight I can now confirm that all expectations have been met, and exceeded anything I could’ve imagined.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
