Marooners’ Talk: Episode 029 – “One BILLION Dollars!”

I’m going to be punching bears left and right once Assassin’s Creed III comes out. I may spend an entire day just running around punching bears. In “One BILLION Dollars!,” Episode 029 of Marooners’ Talk, we discuss the Assassin’s Creed III gameplay trailer, the successful marketing efforts of the Assassin’s Creed III team in involving the community, the diametrically opposed awful “Team Ghost” marketing campaign for next week’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, The Avengers surpassing the worldwide $1 billion mark, the PS Vita’s lackluster performance, and what we’re looking for out of E3 this year. Marooners’ Talk: Episode 028 – “Avengers Assemble”

It may be pretty obvious from the title, but Episode 028 of Marooners’ Talk (“Avengers Assemble”) is all about the recent Dark Knight Rises trailer. That’s right, folks, an hour and a half of dissection and discussion on the trailer for the thrilling climax to Nolan’s Batman trilogy is yours, mere clicks away. Truth be told, while we did venture off into other Marvel properties, and some DC properties, the brunt of the podcast focuses squarely on the recently released Avengers live-action feature film. The film has finished out the weekend smashing multiple records, and for damn good reason. Read the full story

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 027 – “Thom Clancy Talks Ghost Recon”

If that episode title doesn’t grab your attention, then I don’t know what will. What’s that? I spelled his name wrong? No, we weren’t lucky enough to have Tom Clancy himself join in and discuss his creation. In “Thom Clancy Talks Ghost Recon,” the 27th episode of Marooners’ Talk, I, along with Thom Clancy, son of Tom Clancy, talk about our experiences with the Ghost Recon: Future Soldier multiplayer beta, how it has improved from the multiplayer presented at last year’s E3, and what we’re looking forward to with the upcoming retail release of the title.

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 026 – “Spidey’s Turning 50″

In keeping with Ahmed’s run of Spidey Month pieces, Episode 026 of Marooners’ Talk, titled, “Spidey’s Turning 50,” focuses primarily on Spider-Man, with the occasional tangental comic character stealing focus for a few moments. We ran a little long, as we will often do when we get into our critical nerd modes, but managed to come to a close about ten minutes before we hit the hour and a half mark. The unrepentant Spider-Man fanboy meets the critical nerd in this week’s HARD HITTING EPISODE. Read the full story

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 025 – “The One Where We Complain About Shit”

As I mentioned in last week’s episode posting, our Episode 024 recording of Marooners’ Talk ended up running over two hours long. At a certain point, I decided to just call the second half of last week’s conversation Episode 025, titled, “The One Where We Complain About Shit.” Sitting here, a little over a week later, I can’t quite recall what we were complaining about, other than the feeling that it was serious business. We went off of the complaining route for a short while, but I do think that most of this episode proves the title apropos. Read the full story

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 024 – “Everyone Dies”

Episode 024 of Marooners’ Talk, titled, “Everyone Dies,” ran extremely long. Instead of pushing out an episode clocking in at well over two hours, we spontaneously decided to simply title the second half of our conversation as Episode 025, which will be available for you next week. Episode 024 was originally intended to focus solely on the first book of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones, and the HBO series season that was adapted from it. We were unable to limit ourselves to that, however, and ended up talking about the entire series of books as a whole. So, you know…there are probably spoilers for people who haven’t read the series in its entirety. Read the full story

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 023 – “Looking Forward”

The original idea for this episode of the Marooners’ Talk podcast was to really get into our anticipated titles for the rest of calendar year 2012. While we eventually got around to that, I believe our first 30-45 minutes focused on Internet providers, Doctor Who, used games, and various other topics. Come to think of it, the last 15 minutes kind of got off topic, too, so you’ve got about 45-50 minutes of anticipation discussion in “Looking Forward,” Episode 023 of Marooners’ Talk. Marooners’ Talk: Episode 022 – “Oh, the horror!”

We should be back on our regular schedule of recording and publishing next week, with the podcast being available earlier in the day on Monday. This week’s episode of Marooners’ Talk, our 22nd, titled, “Oh, the horror!” jumps all over the place. We spend some time talking about the decline/demise of the survival horror genre, then transition into the apparent disappearance of great Japanese developed games from the Western market. A brief discussion about the “games as art” argument is followed by a resurgence of last week’s topic concerning the hatred that game journalists have for readers, and the disregard that game companies have for customers. The cost of game development gets a piece, and we close with Kotaku’s hard hitting coverage of…McDonald’s McFish Bites. Quality stuff there, Kotaku. Read the full story

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 021 – “IDDQD”

I know that most of you will see “IDDQD” as the title for Episode 021 of Marooners’ Talk and think, “Hey, this must be a great episode completely centered around DOOM and other games of its time and genre!” Yes, we do spend a few minutes on DOOM and the infinitely superior, yet unfortunately less successful Apogee title, Rise of the Triad. Seriously, Rise of the Triad is better than DOOM. Anyway, we discuss the Child’s Play donations from Retake Mass Effect as well as one man’s FTC filing for false advertising in the number of Mass Effect endings. More importantly, though, we discuss the hatred that most game journalists have for gamers. You know, the people they write for. Read the full story

Marooners’ Talk: Episode 020 – “The Not Mass Effect Episode”

Marooners’ Rock has reached Episode 020, titled, “The Not Mass Effect Episode.” Despite its name, there is actually a great deal of Mass Effect discussion that takes place in this episode. That being said, there are also a great deal of spoilers for those who have not played Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, or Mass Effect 3. No content is held back, so if you haven’t had the chance to finish yet, and you don’t want to know what happens, don’t listen. There, I think my due diligence is fulfilled.

The success of BioWare’s choice-driven project known as the Mass Effect franchise is the main topic, with all of the minutiae and details discussed.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
