Central Valley Buzz with Chuck Leonard

Yesterday, Chris and I went on to Central Valley Buzz to promote our site and help spread the word about our Blogathon fundraiser for One Love for Chi. Since we haven’t been on anything live in awhile, I was a little anxious, but I think we did a great job.

For those of you who were unable to tune in, the repeat already aired early this morning, but I can give you a rundown of what went on. When we got there, the room was rather warm due to all of the lighting, and the fact that there was a guy prepping for a cooking segment. It also didn’t help that he was making a salsa with Habanero peppers, so while we were waiting to go on, my eyes started to sting a little.

Once we were on air, I got a little tripped up at first, but Chris was there to explain the history of World of Meh!, and what inspired us to start it. We, honestly, started this site just as a creative outlet, so clearly things have evolved! After we described what our site is all about, we were kept on for a second segment that touched on how the two of us met (through an online dating site, if you must know), and then we shared with everybody the amazing story of Chi, his progress, and our efforts to help him.

Chuck Leonard, host of the show, autographed, on air, a pair of clippers that were used on a recent show to shave his head. He then donated them with the hope that it will help attract more people to our site, and boost donations. Pretty awesome, eh? After we we were done, I logged in to check our site states and there was a considerable spike in hits, so thank you Chuck!

If you are a fan of Central Valley Buzz, or are an evil scientist that wants a piece of his DNA to do some crazy cloning experiment, donate to our One Love for Chi fundraiser and earn a shot at winning those clippers, amongst other prizes!

Blockbuster Used Game Deals

Back when Chris and I went to rent LEGO Harry Potter, the guy at Blockbuster told us about some used games he had behind the counter. All were for Xbox 360, and the prices were fantastic!

The games, which were all $6.99, came in a generic semi-frosted clear case, but no box art, and no booklet. At first, it seemed like all titles were various sports games, but then Assassins Creed II and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed appeared. CHA-CHING! We asked to look at both discs, and they were perfect. Not a scratch on them, and they weren’t refurbished. Instead of spending a little over $60.00 retail on both games brand new, we were able to get them for a few cents over $15.00 – all because they didn’t come with box art and a booklet.

Knowing about this fantastic deal, Chris started to hit up other local Blockbuster store locations on his way home from work, and we got the first Assassins Creed and BioShock for $6.99. Four great Xbox 360 games for less than $30.50 after tax. What a damn bargain! During one of his excursions, Chris game across Splinter Cell: Conviction, but it was priced $34.99 because it came with the booklet. Massive price jump all because of a booklet? Completely ridiculous, so we’ll have to wait on Sam Fisher.

Last week, Chris found a website where gamers who are big into design created mock box art, shockingly similar to the final retail product, so at work he printed out covers for Assassins Creed II and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Bargain, bargain, bargain!!!

So, are you low on funds, but want some good titles? Check out your local Blockbuster because not only do they have these great deals on 360 games, but they also had PS3 and Wii games to choose from. We aren’t too sure about the pricing for them, but it will still be significantly less than retail!

Happy hunting!

Thank You Activision!

Alright friends of Meh, I promised that today we would be getting something special in the mail for our One Love for Chi/Blogathon fundraiser, and it’s here!

Originally the delivery was slated to arrive around 3 in the afternoon, so I was surprised when the FedEx guy came around 11. Each box weighs about 26 pounds, and it reminded me of the days when I worked at GameStop as an Assistant Manager. I loved shipment days.

Courtesy of the amazing folks at Activision, Team Hero, and Dan Amrich (otherwise known as OneOfSwords), we were given not one..not two…not three, but FOUR complete Band Hero kits to give away as prizes during the Blogathon starting on July 31st!

Each kit includes: the Band Hero game, a microphone, guitar, and drum kit. This is the real deal folks! We have two kits for the Nintendo Wii, one kit for Xbox 360, and another for Sony PlayStation 3. All Band Hero equipment is fully compatible with Guitar Hero, which is awesome, and all kits are retail sealed.

Band Hero comes with an impressive 65 tracks straight out of the box, with some notable songs and artists like:

  • Bravery, The – Believe
  • Carl Douglas – Kung Fu Fighting
  • Cheap Trick – I Want You To Want Me (Live)
  • Culture Club – Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
  • David Bowie – Let’s Dance
  • Devo – Whip It
  • Duran Duran – Rio
  • Everclear – Santa Monica
  • Fall Out Boy – Sugar We’re Goin’ Down
  • Filter – Take A Picture
  • Finger Eleven – Paralyzer
  • Go-Go’s, The – Our Lips Are Sealed
  • Hinder – Lips Of An Angel
  • Jackson 5 – ABC
  • Janet Jackson – Black Cat
  • Joan Jett – Bad Reputation
  • Katrina And The Waves – Walking On Sunshine
  • Maroon 5 – She Will Be Loved
  • Marvin Gaye – I Heard It Through The Grapevine
  • Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Impression That I Get
  • N.E.R.D. – Rock Star
  • No Doubt – Just A Girl
  • No Doubt – Don’t Speak
  • OK Go – A Million Ways
  • Papa Roach – Lifeline
  • Pat Benatar – Love Is A Battlefield
  • Poison – Every Rose Has Its Thorn
  • Roy Orbison – Oh Pretty Woman
  • Snow Patrol – Take Back The City
  • Spice Girls – Wannabe
  • Styx – Mr. Roboto
  • Taylor Swift – Love Story
  • Taylor Swift – You Belong To Me
  • The Rolling Stones – Honky Tonk Woman
  • Tonic – If You Could Only See
  • Turtles, The – Happy Together
  • Village People – Y.M.C.A.
  • Yellowcard – Ocean Avenue
  • …..and many more!

Band Hero has some pretty awesome features as well. With Party Play, your friends can drop in or out of any song, without fearing you’ll fail it, and at the push of a button. You can also switch your personal options, such as instrument or difficulty. Sing-Along mode allows you and up to 3 friends to jam out, karaoke style. Just like in Party Play, Sing-Along allows your friends to drop in or out. Perfect for harmonizing at certain places in songs.

Should you wish to have four singers, four drummers, or four guitarists, you have that option in Band Hero, amongst other combinations. Xbox 360 players who have Xbox Live Gold subscriptions can use their Avatar characters and rock out in any mode, whereas Nintendo Wii gamers have access to an exclusive mode called Mii Freestyle. In Mii Freestyle, players can create their own songs, and be able to record/edit/share their videos showcasing their Mii’s. In addition to being able to use your Avatar or Mii, both Taylor Swift and Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levine, are playable characters. Guitar Hero owners will love how you can import your tracks from Guitar Hero: World Tour and Guitar Hero 5 straight into Band Hero. So much better than having to constantly change out discs, no?

Want to win one of these? Then donate, or help spread the word to earn entires into our raffle. Each one of these kits sells for around $150.00 retail, not including tax, so wouldn’t you love to win one just by donating $10 dollars? I’d say that’s a pretty good deal!

I can’t even begin to express the amount of gratitude I have right now, because I am completely overwhelmed by Activision’s generosity. They have gone above and beyond, and I can’t thank them enough.

So donate, tell your friends, get them involved, and spread the word about our great cause because it’s all about Chi!

Maynard James Keenan performing at Activision Event

So, I was deeply saddened the other night when on Twitter I saw that Maynard James Keenan (TOOL, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer) was performing at the Activision E3 event, for what I can only assume was to help promote Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. If you are unfamiliar with my love for Maynard, please read this post. What really made it worse was when I heard he was performing Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Truly a classic song. I admit, I was a little skeptical because Freddie Mercury was a beast, and his vocal skills are incredibly hard to top.

However, after watching this video, which was oh so kindly uploaded onto YouTube by InsaneFameNYC, I think MJK did a great job. Like I said, it’s hard to top the amazingness that is, and forever will be, Freddie Mercury. Joining him was Billy Howerdel, you know… the guitar player from when Maynard was doing A Perfect Circle, and also a massive choir. Anyways, check out the video for yourself and let me know what you thought!

Nintendo 3DS Unveiled

Just a few hours ago, Nintendo unveiled the next addition to it’s handheld family, the 3DS. Global President for Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, presented the handheld, and gave us some really great information. The premiere of the device was a big deal. A lit up column rose from the ground, and atop of it was the 3DS.

Unlike other 3D technology out there, the 3DS doesn’t require you to wear any glasses. I think that’s great because I already have to wear glasses. I don’t need another pair on top of my everyday ones. No glasses ensure there is “nothing between you and the experience”. The 3DS boasts a 3.5 light screen display on top, and only the bottom screen is touch. Why? They found that touch screens mixed with 3D didn’t go over too well, and I can’t blame them for wanting to give us the best product possible. In fact, I’m glad they were looking out for us.

It’s been 6 years since the Nintendo DS first launched. Since then they’ve made improvements to the graphic capability and the 3DS will display those advancements. There is a 3D depth slider, where the player can control the depth perception, a new slide pad for analog play, motion sensors, and gyro-sensors. The 3DS will still come with a camera, and all pictures taken can be viewed in 3D. How cool is that?

One huge upgrade is that the 3DS can play 3D movies. No specific details will be discussed at E3 this week, but as the handheld launch gets closer, I’m sure we will know more. At the Nintendo booth, 3DS are on display and viewers can choose from How to Train Your Dragon by Dreamworks, Tangled by Disney, or Legend of the Guardians by WB to watch. The 3DS will still be able to access the internet via Wi-Fi, and even if you aren’t near Wi-Fi, new stages, quests, ghost data, and rankings will be automatically downloaded. Another awesome feature is if you are away from your DS, your 3DS can still communicate with other 3DS and gather new data, items, etc. No authorization required.

Loads of developers are on board with the 3DS, and they even announced who and what titles we can expect. Here is a quick rundown:

  • Nintendogs featuring cats
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • Capcom – Resident Evil. New, original and where players can explore all sorts of secrets, and who knows what can be hiding behind objects at the end of hallways, or even furniture?
  • Ubisoft – Assassins Creed
  • Square Enix – Kingdom Hearts
  • Konami – Metal Gear
  • Activision – DJ Hero
  • Namco – Ridge Racer
  • Level-5 – Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle

At the very end of the presentation, there was a short trailer for the 3DS, featuring Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Reggie Fils-Amie. I don’t know if it’s an indicator of what’s to come, but check it out and tell me in the comments below what you think. If it is, then some pretty amazing things are heading our way.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
