Wii Love You

For the past few days, I’ve been feeling an urge to get back and play Wii Fit. It’s been awhile and I’m normally a really lazy person so I don’t know why I felt like sweating, being sore, and making an ass out of myself.

I was going to play it back on Tuesday, but Chris came home from work early so I didn’t bother with it. Today, however, was a different story.

As the day dragged on, I got bored. I turned on the Wii, played about a half hour of Animal Crossing (in which our town is ravaged with weeds and looks like crap), and then popped in Wii Fit. I was laughing to myself about how I was stupid for doing this and how I wouldn’t be able to walk in the morning, like last time, but I ignored that and turned it on anyways.

After selecting my Mii the little Wii Fit Board character lovingly let me know that it had been 116 days since I had logged in, and how I failed to reach my goal. I can’t even remember what my goal was!

116 days….

(obviously you guys/gals can tell that we are truly getting our moneys worth with this game, hah!)

I then decided to go through the test they have to check my balance and check my weight. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had lost weight instead of gaining, like I had thought. Even though it was only 4 lbs, it’s still something! My balance was good, I messed up a little bit, and my Wii Fit Age went up by a couple of years but I didn’t care.

While playing it, I made sure to avoid the Lunges because the only time I did them, I got light headed and wanted to vomit. Instead I focused on the Balance and Aerobic sections. I unlocked a few games in the Balance category, one in the Strength, and one in the Yoga. My new favorite one for the Balance is where my Mii is in a bubble, like in Super Monkey Ball, and I control the ball down this river by leaning left, right, front, and back. It was so fun that I did it 3 times in a row! I was also shocked at how difficult the Advanced Step routine was compared to the original one. Kicks were added, and you even had to step on the board sideways! I’m shocked that I didn’t trip over my feet or trip over Donnie, who was running all over the place with his prized Squirly.

After playing for about an hour I knew I was done. I was starting to get sore and my back, which is horrible, started to hurt. Odds are, when I wake up tomorrow morning, I am going to hate myself for doing Wii Fit but hopefully I can get in the habit of doing at least a half hour a day.

I just wish that Nintendo came out with an update where you can play with your friends using the Wii Speak. No cameras, because that could be embarrassing, but on the “step” balance game, the running aerobic one, and on a few others you can easily do them with a friend and converse with them. It might make people want to play more because, like in real life, a buddy system is always successful.

I’ll let you guys know tomorrow if I have to hobble around the apartment like a 80 year old.

City Crossing: Country Folk?

Yesterday a good friend of ours came up from L.A. to take care of some things.  While she was here, we got to spend a few hours hanging out with her (and had some good chinese food that is doubling as my lunch).  As yesterday was Tax Day, a few local eateries were offering free items to drum up business; Cinnabon offered free mini-rolls, while Maggie Moo’s ice cream parlor offered a free full scoop of ice cream.  Being the type of people who can’t say no to a free thing, we hit up the Cinnabon for our free rolls, then walked across the promenade to Maggie Moo’s for our free scoop (both the rolls and the scoop were delicious).  On our way back to the car, we mention going back to the apartment and playing some video games.  Our friend (we’ll call her Mandy, because she doesn’t like that name, if I recall correctly) then says something that Lindsey and I both got a kick out of regarding one of our games.  Specifically, she said:

“Are we going to go play City Crossing: Country Folk?”

We began teasing her about this immediately and informed her that a blog post would be made about it.

And here we are.

I’ve got a lovely bunch of turnips

While that doesn’t quite have the ring of “coconuts”, it’s fairly relevant to Lindsey and me, as well as others like us.

By “like us”, I mean Animal Crossing fiends.

Lindsey and I bought white turnips (kind of a stock market thing, in the game) at 91 each, which is a fairly cheap price.  Lindsey bought $80,000 worth, and I bought $320,000 worth.  Today, we found a town that was purchasing turnips at 524 each.  Lindsey turned a profit of approximately $300,000.  I turned a profit of almost $2,000,000.  Things are going well in our AC town.

Now all we need is for things to go that well in real life, and we’d be perfectly happy.

The Married Gamers

I feel so naughty because I didn’t write this blog sooner, but better late than never!

Last Sunday, Chris and Kelly of The Married Gamers came over to our apartment for lunch and to record a podcast. We had a lot of fun. It was really similar to what we do on our MehCasts but with better equipment lol!

Like we’ve said before on our show, we have very low production quality but we are ok with that. Chris and Kelly came armed with a sound board, two mics with stands, and a bunch of wires that did who knows what.

They started off the same way we do… making introductions and what not. After they discussed some topics that had carried  over from their last show they introduced us.

I was feeling a bit awkward for the simple fact that whenever I speak into any microphone, it distorts my voice and I sound like a dude. I was sure that it would happen with the podcast so I made sure to announce that to the poor listeners.

We started off discussing a little bit about ourselves. Chris got confused and thought it was a dating service and Kelly interupted him before he could say that he liked taking long walks on the beach. After we got that out of the way we got into how World of Meh came about. Chris, being the witty man that he is, started going off on a rant about him being a pilot, crashing in South America, aliens entrusting him with World of Meh, and while this is going on the other Chris (I should probably call him Chris v2 for the rest of this post lol) was cracking up. When Chris was done Kelly asked v2 what was so funny and v2 was able to say in between chuckles that Chris’ story was none other than the Green Lantern.

For me the highlight was when we talked about Animal Crossing for about 10 minutes. Kelly, Chris, and I covered many different topics like Tom Nook, turnips, fishing, and many other geeky things.

About halfway through Donnie started to get riled up over something outside so if you listen closely you can hear him in all his glory and towards the end of the podcast the four of us talked about what we are watching on movies or TV and what we are playing.

After the show was done they packed up their things and stayed around for a little bit longer before heading off but we had a lot of fun.

The podcast has been up since Wednesday and it is free to download through iTunes. Just search for The Married Gamers. Some other podcasts will come up but you are going to want the one under Chris and Kelly Brown.

The podcast we were featured on was called Meh Warriors so download it, support our friends, and I hope you enjoy! Be sure to check out their other podcasts since ours was their 90th!

Also, give them a review and let us know what you thought of it. Hopefully we can do another one in the future or who knows…. maybe we might start our own!

The Twitter Gestapo!

Yesterday, while playing Animal Crossing, Chris and I decided to check out the Married Gamers (Chris and Kelly) live podcast on Ustream. It was really entertaining and we found ourselves laughing a lot. Towards the end of their podcast they mentioned that they were going to get some lunch at Chick-Fil-A. Chris was in the kitchen getting ready to make lunch so I asked him if he would want to go and meet up with them. He basically said, “sure, why the hell not?” We sent out a message on both of our Twitter accounts, even telling @MsClovisEskimo (Melyssa) that she better get her buns there too, letting our fellow local followers know that they were more than welcome to join in the festivities.

When we got to Chick-Fil-A, Chris and I saw Dane (the guy we stood in line with for the Maynard wine signing) and chatted with him for a bit. Totally didn’t know that he worked there. So once everybody got there we ordered our food and sat down. Since we are slaves to the Twitter machine, all of us couldn’t help but keep checking our accounts every 3-5 minutes. Some of us were getting people saying how they were never invited (yet we CLEARLY sent out about 5 messages), some criticized our location choice, and then it seemed as if there was a mini rivalry going on. Some other local tweeters were having an impromptu meet up at the Fashion Fair Mall and I joked that we should totally go there with leather jackets and pull off some West Side Story number. Obviously that got a laugh.

We had a pretty amazing conversation during our stay at Chick-Fil-A (did you get my clever rhyme? lol) which resulted in much laughter. I swear it felt like everybody in there was probably staring at us.

Dane kept coming around and was giving us strange looks but we were having a great time. We talked about the Tweet Up, laughed about stupid things I did when I was younger like shaking my ass out of a car window during my high school years to “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot, video games, more nerdy stuff, and then we came up with a great idea for another Tweet Up but I will not give out the details because it’s far too amazing to share right now. I guess it serves you right for not coming to our uber cool party!

One thing that was amazing was a guy in a royal blue soccer jersey. We aren’t sure if it was one for a team or his own, but the poor unfortunate man had the last name of “KAKA” on his back. Upon seeing this we all immediately chuckled like a bunch of school children, and then reached for our phones to take a picture. Oh, the age of technology!

Here is Exhibit A: KAKA

Chris took this wonderful picture. Since he sat down before we could get a great angle, Chris got up and asked for more water up at the front and on his way back took the shot. It was a wee bit obvious but I guess it was a good thing that he had his back turned towards him! After Chris put it up, I retweeted it, Chris and Kelly retweeted it, and then Melyssa retweeted it. Then a guy on my list retweeted my retweet of a tweet! Currently that one image has gotten more than 102 views! HOORAY FOR KAKA!

Another thing that made us laugh at was when Dane came around and asked what Twitter was. We weren’t laughing at him, I just want to clarify that. We were laughing at the fact that we probably made the site seem so overly interesting since we were talking about it and having a grand ol’ time. At one point we looked at our phones and noticed it was after 6 PM. We spent over 3 hours inside Chick-Fil-A and it was fantastic.

From there we went to Cali’s Frozen Custard which is in the old Java Jet right next to Chili’s off of Fresno and Herndon before we all went to Best Buy. Melyssa was following behind us and Chris neglected to let her know that his turn signal lights weren’t working (we have to fix the fuse). Since we also failed to get phone numbers and needed to ask which Best Buy everybody wanted to go to, we got on Twitter and asked it lol! The obvious choice was the one in River Park since it was the closest to our custard location. Chris and I were the first in line for the drive thru so once we got our tasty treats we waited for everybody else.

We literally looked like a caravan, driving around in a line, and when we got to Best Buy we even parked near each other.

Right at the entrance of Best Buy they had this sign which I must say is pretty hardcore of them:

Taken by ME!!!

Taken by ME!!!

Inside Best Buy we were given a rare treat. Chris and I are looking at upgrading our equipment we use for our show on UStream so the webcam department was our first of many stops in the store. Some of the employees were there restocking the shelves when I caught a glimpse of something ridiculous. I was standing there with Melyssa when it walked on by and I gave her this look like “I totally hope you saw that too!” Of course she did and then the laughter started up again. We immediately let everybody else in our group of awesomeness know and then they too joined in with the giggles.

We were laughing at this guy who was blonde, pretty pale, and rather lanky. That wasn’t the funny part. In both of his ears, which were pierced in the lobe, were HUGE crowns covered in little sparkly fake diamonds. These were the sort of things little girls would wear when playing dress up, and would hopefully be clip-ons. He looked so incredibly ridiculous and of course the first thing we all wanted to do was take a picture and put it up on TwitPic for everybody to see. Since he was walking by too quickly it became obvious that somebody would have to ask him if they could take a picture of him.

I’m the type of person who will pretty much go up to anybody and ask a stupid question (and yet I will die at the sight of Maynard lol) so I was the one who stepped into the battlefield. I took my engagement ring off and handed it to Chris, put my left hand into my pocket so that he couldn’t see the ring indentation on my finger, and started walking up to him. At first I tried to make it like I was just looking at my phone but I knew it wouldn’t work. Knowing that I would have to actually ask him to get a proper angle with no blur my conversation with him went like this (oh… in front of another co-worker too)

“Do you mind if I take your picture? I think you’re really pretty.”

After that he sort of gave me this odd look, which was understandable, and then I replied with this:

“In a manly kind of way.”

I wasn’t surprised when he gave me this reply:

“Yes, I mind.”

So I said OK and walked away only to then burst in laughter about 10 feet away from him. I told everybody what happened and then they too started to laugh their asses off. Since we all then started feeling a bit uncomfortable around the guy, who started to sneer at us a wee bit, we walked away from that department and go to look at the Wii games. Chris and Kelly were on the hunt for Mario Kart but Best Buy failed them and were sold out. From there we checked out some sound boards and mics.

After that we noticed that it was dinner time! Keeping our Twitter mojo going, we let everybody on our lists know that we were going to Red Robin for dinner and that people could join us. When walking out of Best Buy we cracked a joke at how we were walking around the store in a group of 2 guys and 3 girls, that we probably looked like a mob, and how we should get custom shirts with our Twitter names on them. (BTW… if ANYBODY does this before we do that will be totally uncool because it was our idea first! :p)

At Red Robin everybody and their mom was having a birthday, or so it seemed. Almost every 10 minutes a huge group of employees were coming around clapping and chanting some horrible song. Since we didn’t want to feel left out we decided that we were going to LIE and say that it was somebody’s birthday in our group. We then asked who would be having the next birthday and it was Kelly (@MrsLeftyBrown)!! Since everybody hates us and is jealous of our super cool fun group, nobody came and met up with us at Red Robin but we had tons of fun without them. I had an embarrassing picture taken of me with a giant piece of melted Swiss Cheese coming out of my mouth since it was still attached to my turkey burger.

We laughed some more about random stuff, and then after we got our checks I whispered something to the waitress. I told her that it was Kellys birthday and about 5 minutes later she was totally embarrassed – oh and I totally got a picture of it too!

Exhibit B!!!! :

Taken by ME!!!

Taken by ME!!!

After that we disbanded and went back to our own houses, but since yesterday was my only day I could sell my red turnip in Animal Crossing and since my store was closed due to Tom Nook renovating it I had to go into Kellys town so there we met up again! I totally got 16,000 bells out of it so it was soooooo worth it!

Hopefully we have a little get together again soon because it was a blasty blast! Chris and I might, and I do stress the word MIGHT, be going to the Wondercon this upcoming weekend in San Francisco and we know that Chris (not my sweetie) and Kelly are already going. Maybe San Francisco debauchery is in order!!

California Love

Yesterday was a pretty great day. It started off getting some local love from @mikeoz on Twitter. He works for the local newspaper, The Fresno Bee, and has written some really great articles. When I take the time to actually read the paper I always make sure to check out what he has to say. For the Fresno Bee employees there is a website called FresnoBeeHive where they add additional content that didn’t make the newspaper, and frankly the site is a lot of fun. They do concert ticket giveaways on there for local shows, the viewers get the chance to comment on the articles like on a blog site, and I find that that one website has alerted me to more things going on in my town than I could have imagined.

@mikeoz created a post on the site about Twitter. It was for the local community who hadn’t created an account or who was new to the site. Basically it was filled with recommendations. There was a section about which tv stations were on there, other cool local things/places who were on Twitter, Fresno Bee peeps, and then there was a category with just 11 “cool peeps” that he thought people should start off with.

I was totally delighted when he asked me Thursday evening if I would be cool with him putting me as one of the peeps. Of course I said yes and thanked him because it truly was flattering. Surprisingly there are a lot of locals on Twitter so he could have easily chosen somebody else because frankly lets face it, I’m not too terribly exciting lol!

As a result of that blog, I gained many new followers – obviously local ones – and I got to meet some of them at the Tweet Up that took place Friday evening at the Daily Grill. It’s always great coming across new people that you might not have found out through other means.

At the Tweet Up last night, that was wonderfully arranged by @FresYes whose real name is Jason Farris, Chris and I were only there for a little over an hour but we had a blast. We got there later than we wanted to but it was totally my fault. I couldn’t find a stupid top to wear. Then we had to leave earlier than we would have liked to but we have our obligations to our show and to our viewers.

It was great getting to meet everybody face to face because some of the people we have on Twitter use random images instead of self photograph for their avatars. @ShyTrbleMaker was a blast to meet. She was so incredibly sweet. We also got to meet @FresYes and @mikeoz, who came with his wife @tanyaoz. We met many others and there were loads more there that Chris and I didn’t even recognize!

During our conversations we came across @respres, Jeff Turner, and he showed us this great app for the iPhone called Qik. After going through the set-up of the app we can then stream live video. It will provide our Twitter followers with link in a tweet and then the viewers can start asking us questions as we are live. From what I was able to see there wasn’t a way to text the message to people but verbally answering is just fine. He had a great suggestion for us, since the videos are saved and then can be embedded or linked to, to use the video snippets as part of a weekly re-cap during our MehCast.

Absolute genius good Sir!

He was even so sweet to show us how it worked and gave Chris and I a little interview right there on the spot. In the interview we talked about our MehCast and our blog site so thank you Jeff for helping us get our name out there! We really appreciate it.

Another amazing display of Cali Love came from the couple who run Married Gamers. Every week on Saturday they do a Podcast solely about video games. Chris and I both have the Mr. (@leftybrown) on our lists and we were introduced to the Mrs, who is an Animal Crossing addict like us! Obviously we spent a bit of time discussing the game that is destroying our very lives, but we also talked about other things as well. They are going to be so awesome and so kind as to mention our blogsite/show during their Podcast that is runing today.

All in all, yesterday was a great day. It was a great day for our site, it was a great day for our show, and it was just great getting to meet our Twitter friends and making new ones in the process!

To everybody that I mentioned above, thank you so much again. We really do appreciate it and hope that someday in the future we can repay you all!

Wii Week Wrap-up

Well, we started the week without really meaning to talk about the Wii every day, but it happened, so we decided to call it our Wii Week.  It was an interesting week filled with highs and lows.  On the one hand, we paid off a few house expansions in Animal Crossing, and I fucking RULE at Mario Kart, but on the other hand, Francine is a dirty bitch who robbed me blind.

I really fucking hate Francine now.

I’m going to try to get her to move out of Korriban.

Anyway.  That’s all for Wii Week!  Hopefully you enjoyed it (assuming anyone actually reads this drivel).  Maybe later on we’ll do a Virtual Console Week where we download and play games through the Wii’s Virtual Console (METAL SLUG!).

Wii are Angry

Wednesday night, I went on a fishing bonanza, filling my Animal Crossing house with fish to sell the next day in one big selling run.  Last night, a little while after I got home, I made my sales, getting myself up to over 85,000 bells (Animal Crossing currency), a hefty sum indeed.  I continued fishing, wanting to break the 100,000 mark, when I came across one of my town’s residents.  Francine, a rabbit, flagged me down to chat.  I took a break from fishing to see what she wanted.  She had a Sea Butterfly!  A Sea Butterfly is a tiny little fish that sells for 1,000 bells (a good price for something so small).  She asked if I would be interested in buying it and how much I would be willing to pay, which is followed by a vertical slider ranging from “Nothing” to “All of my money”.  I would hardly be willing to pay more than I could sell it for, obviously, so I moved the slider down near the Nothing (but not on the Nothing) option and continue the conversation.  She responded to my offer with:

“So 6,500 bells sounds about right?  Great!”

And suddenly, I find myself handing over 6,500 bells for a little Sea Butterfly.  I didn’t have an option to reject her ridiculous asking price.  I was forced into a purchase that lost me over 5,000 bells.  Needless to say, I was pretty pissed at that gameplay element, so I put in Mario Kart.

I fucking rule at Mario Kart.

A Wii Bit of Devastation

Our new Wii does not come without consequences.  Since we purchased our Wii, our apartment has gone to hell.  We moved our coffee table to place the Wii Fit Balance Board down.  We have dishes from LAST THURSDAY still sitting in the sink (I finally washed some yesterday and set some others in hot water to soak).  We have empty snack bags (and some not so empty snack bags) littering the floor around the couch.  We have empty fast food bags and empty Starbucks Cups creating intricate patterns of trash on the floor around the couch.  Our laundry is undone, our carpet is unvacuumed, our tile is unmopped, our trash is untakenout (untakenout?), and our dishes, as mentioned earlier, are uncleaned.

And we’re okay with that, because at least our Animal Crossing houses are very tidy, and we’ve been able to pay off two expansions!

Wii Week Continues

Well, since Monday was heavily focused on the Wii, and Tuesday documented a Wii-related experience, I figured we might as well make it Wii Week and run three more days of Wii blog posts.  I bet you’re all excited about that!

Lindsey and I have been playing a lot of Animal Crossing: City Folk since we got it.  It is the most played game we own now.  When we got it, I figured that would be her solo game, Super Mario Galaxy would be my solo game, and Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart would be our together games.

I’ve played more Animal Crossing than Super Mario Galaxy.  Not because Super Mario Galaxy is a lesser game (it’s an amazing game), but because Animal Crossing is so easy and relaxed that you can’t help but lose track of time.

Which brings me to the point of this post:  Our lives are being devoured by the Wii.

Devoured, I say.

It’s a serious problem.  We’ve started caring less about things we enjoyed before because we’d rather be playing Animal Crossing.  The biggest problem is that I am completely aware of this problem, and I’m not going to do a thing about it.  I need to have a perfect rating for our town.  It will happen, and we will reap the benefits.

We’ve both had our houses expanded after paying off our original mortgage.  Lindsey has been grinding fishing for extra money, and I’ve started manipulating the residents.  Oh, it’s so very fun.

Is it weird that I like this game so much?

-Because I said so

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!

For more detail, please see our About page.
