A Wizard of Earthsea

I am a fan of fantasy novels.  One might even go so far as to label me an aficionado. One book that has been a favorite of mine in this genre for a couple of decades is the Ursula K. LeGuin story A Wizard of Earthsea.

A Wizard of Earthsea tells the early story of Ged, known as Sparrowhawk.  The story is, in many ways, a coming of age tale that sees Ged transform from an arrogant child into a wise mage.  A Wizard of Earthsea creates a wonderful world with a wonderful magical structure behind it.

Magic in Earthsea is not the result of a magical spell or wand, as it is so often displayed.  In Earthsea, true magic comes from the true names of things.  When you have the true name of an object, you have complete control over the object.  A rock can be changed into a diamond, the elements can be controlled, and pure force can be wielded.  This system not only provides something new to the fantasy world, it creates limits for those who would abuse it.

While short, A Wizard of Earthsea is a must-read for a fan of fantasty or adventure.  Even if you’re just a fan of reading, Earthsea is truly entertaining.

Blogathon Challenges and Obstacles

Half an hour passes quickly when you’re otherwise occupied.  I almost lost track of time while getting ready for work!  Luckily, I caught myself and got to a computer in time to get this beauty of a post up.

We have been signed up to participate in the 2009 Blogathon for a couple of weeks.  At the time, we had no other plans whatsoever for this singular Saturday.  Last weekend, however, our situation changed drastically.  For our new readers, allow me to provide a bit of back story.

On April 2, 2009, Lindsey (World of Meh co-author; you’ll meet her in a few hours) and I suddenly decided to get married after being engaged since June 19, 2008.  This came as a bit of a surprise to most people, as they had less than 24 hours notice for the wedding.  Because of this, many of the celebrations and congratulations one traditionally expects were unable to occur, which brings us to last weekend and our modified situation.

My mother decided that tomorrow was the day she would throw us a big family party to celebrate the wedding.  It would hardly be polite to decline such an offer even if we wanted to, so we accepted, already considering our game plan for the Blogathon.  On top of this, however, two of my very good friends from Sacramento (three hours from Fresno, our home town) were able to attend as well, meaning we would be entertaining guests in our home all day!  Including my time at work, our entire day is booked with activities other than the Blogathon!

However, we have made a commitment to the Blogathon, ourselves, and our readers.  We will not disappoint!  Every half hour, for 24 hours, a new post will be up on the World of Meh, obstacles be damned!

See you in 30 minutes!

Welcome to the Blogathon!

Good morning!  My name, as the author tag so concisely indicates, is Chris.  For many, this time of day is almost unheard of, especially on a Saturday.  I, however, must head in to the office for a few hours, so I am more than accustomed to it.  I don’t normally post this early, but this is a special event!  The World of Meh is participating in the 2009 Blogathon!

What does this mean to you, the reader?  It means that every half hour, for 24 hours, you will see a new post on the World of Meh blog!  What will we write about, you ask?  Who knows!  Expect anything from the abysmally mundane to the spectacularly zany!

Be sure to check in every half hour or so for some new bit of trivial nonsense from one of us!  We will be changing shifts throughout the day in order to keep our momentum going.  Speaking of which, a great way for you, the reader, to help keep our momentum going is to comment on our posts as much as you can!  Feedback will make it easier for us to maintain a full 24 hour blog bonanza!

Make sure to sponsor us here!  Registration is, unfortunately, required.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
