California Love

Yesterday was a pretty great day. It started off getting some local love from @mikeoz on Twitter. He works for the local newspaper, The Fresno Bee, and has written some really great articles. When I take the time to actually read the paper I always make sure to check out what he has to say. For the Fresno Bee employees there is a website called FresnoBeeHive where they add additional content that didn’t make the newspaper, and frankly the site is a lot of fun. They do concert ticket giveaways on there for local shows, the viewers get the chance to comment on the articles like on a blog site, and I find that that one website has alerted me to more things going on in my town than I could have imagined.

@mikeoz created a post on the site about Twitter. It was for the local community who hadn’t created an account or who was new to the site. Basically it was filled with recommendations. There was a section about which tv stations were on there, other cool local things/places who were on Twitter, Fresno Bee peeps, and then there was a category with just 11 “cool peeps” that he thought people should start off with.

I was totally delighted when he asked me Thursday evening if I would be cool with him putting me as one of the peeps. Of course I said yes and thanked him because it truly was flattering. Surprisingly there are a lot of locals on Twitter so he could have easily chosen somebody else because frankly lets face it, I’m not too terribly exciting lol!

As a result of that blog, I gained many new followers – obviously local ones – and I got to meet some of them at the Tweet Up that took place Friday evening at the Daily Grill. It’s always great coming across new people that you might not have found out through other means.

At the Tweet Up last night, that was wonderfully arranged by @FresYes whose real name is Jason Farris, Chris and I were only there for a little over an hour but we had a blast. We got there later than we wanted to but it was totally my fault. I couldn’t find a stupid top to wear. Then we had to leave earlier than we would have liked to but we have our obligations to our show and to our viewers.

It was great getting to meet everybody face to face because some of the people we have on Twitter use random images instead of self photograph for their avatars. @ShyTrbleMaker was a blast to meet. She was so incredibly sweet. We also got to meet @FresYes and @mikeoz, who came with his wife @tanyaoz. We met many others and there were loads more there that Chris and I didn’t even recognize!

During our conversations we came across @respres, Jeff Turner, and he showed us this great app for the iPhone called Qik. After going through the set-up of the app we can then stream live video. It will provide our Twitter followers with link in a tweet and then the viewers can start asking us questions as we are live. From what I was able to see there wasn’t a way to text the message to people but verbally answering is just fine. He had a great suggestion for us, since the videos are saved and then can be embedded or linked to, to use the video snippets as part of a weekly re-cap during our MehCast.

Absolute genius good Sir!

He was even so sweet to show us how it worked and gave Chris and I a little interview right there on the spot. In the interview we talked about our MehCast and our blog site so thank you Jeff for helping us get our name out there! We really appreciate it.

Another amazing display of Cali Love came from the couple who run Married Gamers. Every week on Saturday they do a Podcast solely about video games. Chris and I both have the Mr. (@leftybrown) on our lists and we were introduced to the Mrs, who is an Animal Crossing addict like us! Obviously we spent a bit of time discussing the game that is destroying our very lives, but we also talked about other things as well. They are going to be so awesome and so kind as to mention our blogsite/show during their Podcast that is runing today.

All in all, yesterday was a great day. It was a great day for our site, it was a great day for our show, and it was just great getting to meet our Twitter friends and making new ones in the process!

To everybody that I mentioned above, thank you so much again. We really do appreciate it and hope that someday in the future we can repay you all!

Year 1 – Episode 7 Recap

Our Friday the 13th episode started with some unlucky technical difficulties, resulting in a late start of almost 10 minutes!  We sincerely apologize, but we were so busy playing on our new Wii that we didn’t take the time to confirm that everything was ready to go.  Our bad.

This episode saw Lindsey in aluminum devil horns (which were easy to do since all she did was wrap them around her real horns – I’ll probably get in trouble for that one).  We discussed the See’s Candy dental assistant conspiracy, a ridiculous experience we had at the local Apple store, Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman, Maynard coming to our local Whole Foods, Chris Brown and what a bastard he is, our new wii, Lindsey’s new iPhone, cool iPhone apps, the recently ported Kingdom Hearts game, the Joydick (masturbatory game controller), our neighbors finally being kicked out, the bailout plans, the stimulus, the problems Scholastic and the Amazon Kindle are facing, Lindsey’s tax experience, Lindsey’s wish to return to college, our fridge problem, and our gross chicken problem.

We discussed our dog Donnie and his brush with the police, a cool little kitty cat in our apartment complex, my little cousin Pantera, the legend of the Dude from Unit 131, our rediscovery of a local frozen custard place, my Jay and Silent Bob alarm clock, Nip Tuck, Scrubs, Heroes, and South Park.

Good show!

Year 1 Episode 6 Recap

Well I know this is getting posted rather late, but it is better than not at all.

Last Friday we had a really fun show and the chat room was rather active. We started the show off as usual and then got into all the juicy details. Chris even made a foil replica of Ryu’s headband. Ryu is from Street Fighter if some of you readers don’t know that.

We updated everybody about our grand plot against our neighbors, the addition of our new forum, discussed the recent Heroes episode where Sylar goes apeshit, how El Pollo Loco let me down, the Super Bowl commercials, and more stuff that I honestly can’t remember right now because I just can’t.

Chris’s Song Pick Of The Week was Iran So Far Away by Andy Samberg featuring Adam Levine of Maroon 5.

My Song Pick Of The Week was Windowlicker by Aphex Twin.

Chris’s TV Pick Of The Week was Drive.

My TV Pick Of The Week was Little Britain.

Chris’s Movie Pick Of The Week was TMNT.

My Movie Pick Of The Week was Grandma’s Boy.

Thanks again to everybody who came and watched us. We honestly couldn’t do it without you because then we wouldn’t have anybody to talk to!

See you all on Friday!

One year ago…

The date, February 19, 2008.

The time, 8:50pm.

The place, AT&T corporate store at 5180 N Blackstone Ave, in Fresno.

The situation:

For our two month anniversary (two monthaversary, twoaversary, whatever), we decided to purchase new cell phones for each other.  I had wanted an iPhone since before there was even speculation about iPhones.  She wanted a Sidekick LX.  We had spent a great deal of time at a T-Mobile store at 5180 N Palm Ave, but, because of a technical error that was made, I was unable to purchase her Sidekick until the next day.  Since we had spent so much time there, we did not have enough time to make it all the way to the Apple Store at 667 East Shaw Avenue, so we made haste to the nearest corporate AT&T store (mentioned above).  We arrived shortly before closing, and she was able to purchase a 16GB, first generation (the only generation, at the time) iPhone for the man she loves so dearly.  The next day, while wearing my most comfortable work slacks (which, unfortunately, have highly angled pockets, giving case hooks a tenuous grip, at best), the phone fell to the cement.  I noticed no immediate issue; however, eventually, an issue made itself known.  If you do not know this already, the iPhone battery is not removable.  It is soldered to the motherboard, and the power is transferred through three soldered wires, rather than a connection point like most cell phones posess.  Unfortunately, the drop had loosened the battery, which was no longer adhered to the motherboard.  As it moved around, the already weak solder (weak from the impact of the drop) on the third wire gave up, causing the phone to start turning off at random.  Being a natural MacGuyver, I opened the casing, superglued the battery to the motherboard, and scotch taped the loose wire back into place.  Every now and then, I have to reapply the tape, but for the most part, it works just fine.

Anyway.

Lindsey got sick of my twomonthaversary gift, her Sidekick LX, and wanted something with more functionality.  Having suggested that she also get an iPhone almost a year ago, I was not surprised (I wasn’t surprised, just RIGHT, and she admitted it on Friday night after the MehCast while we were in the Farmer Boys drive thru).  To make her happy, I deviously managed to get us to the very same AT&T store we visited almost one year ago without her suspecting a single thing.  A SINGLE THING!  She’ll deny it, but remember, she said that I was RIGHT, and that now counts for absolutely everything we differ on.  Anyway, we went in, and I purchased a brand new 8GB 3G iPhone for the lady I love so dearly.  We go home, and what should happen not a few hours later?

She drops it.

Oh, yes.  She drops it.

I have had to put up with almost one full year of unending crap from her about having dropped my phone the day after she gave it to me as a gift, and what happens when she gets her own?  SHE DROPS IT ON THE FIRST DAY!

I have now started my one year of revenge, wherein I will give her crap about having dropped her iPhone.

Justice is sweet.

Year 1 Episode 5 Recap

Good morning, World of Meh!

So last night marked Episode 5 of Year 1 of our weekly MehCast.  It was a good show, and, if I recall correctly, our best attended and longest show yet!  The two of us had a real blast with this episode, and we really appreciate everyone who has been watching and participating.

We started off the show by discussing Lindsey’s Princess Leia style aluminum foil hair, followed by the “Yo Stink” music video featured on the most recent episode of Nip/Tuck (also posted about earlier this week).  Talking about the video lead into talking Nip/Tuck, which lead to Kitchen Nightmares, Smallville, and the upcoming new episode of Heroes.  We discussed our tryout for Jeopardy! (which was posted about yesterday), Star Wars Battlefront II, Windows Mobile applications, and our plans to get our drug-dealing, loud, douche neighbours kicked out of the apartment complex.

We also had our Weekly Picks:

Song of the Week (Chris):  Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold

Song of the Week (Lindsey):  Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon

TV Show of the Week (Chris):  Fawlty Towers

TV Show of the Week (Lindsey):  Bridezillas

Movie of the Week (Chris):  Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Movie of the Week (Lindsey):  The Fountain

We also discussed some of our upcoming wedding plans, my issues with farting, and other topics which I can’t even begin to remember.
We hope everyone enjoyed Episode 5 of the MehCast, and we hope you all make it back for Episode 6!  See you next week!

–All You Zombies–

While browsing my daily webcomics for Tuesdays, I came upon an accompanying blog post that mentioned what was said to be a very interesting time paradox sci-fi story.  Intrigued, I looked it up and read it online, as it was hosted for free in its entirety by UCSD (University of California, San Diego).  It described a very interesting infinitely reoccurring time loop, which I found fascinating.  However, it also contained a person being their own mother, father, child, and time traveler.  It is well written, and while the story does get pretty weird, it’s still very interesting in its execution of an infinite time loop paradox that resolves all anomalies.

Oh yeah, it was written in the 50s, and nominated for a short fiction award in the 80s.  For the wiki entry, click here, and for the story itself, click here.

We’ll be discussing it briefly (or not so briefly) on this Friday’s MehCast, so be sure to tune in.

Earthworm Jim

Friday, during our MehCast, it started raining.  It’s really the first time since we moved into this apartment that we’ve had a heavy rain.  As we were talking (about what, I don’t remember), I happen to glance over towards the door and what do I notice but an earthworm, halfway up the door mount, slithering in through the gap.  A bit shocked (but not scared, as it was just an earthworm; if it had been wearing a white powersuit, I would have been far more alarmed), I quickly aimed the camera so that everyone could see it.  I gently grabbed it and lobbed it out onto the sidewalk, as it would have died in our apartment from a lack of moisture, then returned to the show.

Fascinating lives we lead, no?

Year 1 Episode 4 Recap

Boobies!

Within that one word lies the secret of our success with last night’s MehCast.  Lindsey wore a top that almost completely failed to conceal her cleavage, which was a reoccuring topic throughout the night.  Overall, we feel that it was a good episode.  We had a lot of fun, and a large (large for us, I mean) number of viewers.  Unfortunately, due to streaming through our wireless router, we also had a large lag (for some people, up to 90 seconds).  Next week we’ll pull out our extra long ethernet cable and hook it up that way, which will hopefully solve the lag problem.

We had a large variety of topics to discuss.  We started off with a timeline of our week, going through our experiences on a daily basis.  I had taken this week off from work so that we could meet with many wedding vendors for our wedding at the end of this year.  We discussed ridiculous price differences between different vendors ($300 cake vs. $1000 cake, and $4000 flowers vs. $2000 flowers).  We went into a little detail about our wedding cake of choice.  We discussed a flower arrangement shop that didn’t do flower arrangements.

Other topics included Lindsey’s workout regime, our lack of a trip to San Francisco, an elbow in my face, cartoon violence and video game violence, and crazy drivers.  We went into our apartment being sprayed for spiders, which had been a problem, and a wasp issue at a local Burger King restaurant.  We talked about Heath Ledger’s Oscar nomination, the abomination known as Smallville, as well as other shows and movies like Kitchen Nightmares, America’s Best Dance Crew, Firefly, Hell’s Kitchen, the Street Fighter movie, This is Spinal Tap, The Fall, Rome, and more.  We discussed Joaquin Phoenix’s rap turn, and the videos that have popped up on the internet.  We talked about a couple of songs we liked, such as Spinal Tap’s Big Bottoms, and the Anti-Nowhere League’s So What.  We also talked about the lack of real multiplayer download play for the Nintendo DS game, Left Brain Right Brain.

All in all, it was a lot of fun, and we enjoyed the episode a great deal.

Boobies!

Wedding Planning

Lindsey and I are getting married this December.  Since there’s a lot to go through, I took this week off from work so that we could sit in with vendors.  So far, we’ve had a lot of good appointments, giving us a great idea of how much our wedding is going to cost, and what kind of wedding it will be.  Let me reassure everyone by saying that we will, absolutely, have a flower piece for the gift book.

Only one person will really get that joke, and she’s sitting next to me.  More details on Friday’s MehCast.

Toro, Toro!

So a few months ago, walking in to Vons (a grocery store on the west coast), I see, from the orner of my eye, Lindsey starting to kick her left foot somewhat on each step, like a bull stamping it’s hoof before it charges.  It persists almost all the way to the store entrance.  I started copying her to tease her about it, when she informed me that she was just trying to get the bottom of her pant leg to jump over the tongue of her sneakers by kicking.  I suppose it’s kind of hard to imagine, so perhaps she’ll give us a demonstration on this Friday’s MehCast.

I thought it would be easier just to hike the pant leg a bit and let it drop over the tongue, but I guess I like to do things the easy way.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!

For more detail, please see our About page.
