When I first heard of the FUNimation anime title Sands of Destruction, I thought to myself, “This will be an interesting series to watch.” Little did I know that the anime is based on a 2010 Nintendo DS role-playing game published by SEGA. Now, we’ve grown used to many movie adaptations of video games, and video game adaptations of movies, that almost always end up sucking. With that said, does this anime series turn out well? That’s for me to know, and you to soon discover in my review of FUNimation’s Sands of Destruction series. Read the full story

As soon as we came up with the podcast title for this week’s episode, I had a sudden urge for a sandwich. I could have asked my wife to make one for me, but I am particularly averse to getting slapped in the back of the head. “Stop Playing Tekken and Make Me A Sandwich” marks Episode 019 of Marooners’ Talk. We’re a day late because SOMEONE had to have a birthday yesterday, resulting in our recording being bumped to accommodate his terribly busy birthday schedule. Read the full story

The Dreamcast was ahead of its time in both hardware and software. Many memorable and unforgettable experiences appeared on the Dreamcast and found homes on digital download platforms years after their original platform’s demise. Crazy Taxi, the Power Stone games, Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, Space Channel 5, Samba de Amigo, Virtua Tennis, and more have all found success following the Dreamcast, both digitally and physically. Now, Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio to yanks), the cel-shaded critical darling, will be taking the stage front and center. Keep an eye out for it on XBLA/PSN/PC this summer. Read the full story

Going into last year’s E3, I was a bit skeptical about Binary Domain. I have an unashamedly vocal love affair with the 2010 SEGA-published Platinum Games third-person shooter Vanquish, and hesitated at the thought of another third-person shooter published by SEGA, set in the future against robots. How could I help but be disappointed when I would naturally draw comparisons to Vanquish? Seeing what Binary Domain had to offer in more detail at E3 gave me a lot of hope for the title, and when the game arrived on my doorstep Friday evening, I was able to put that hope to the test. Binary Domain, SEGA’s squad based shooter for 360 and PS3, will be arriving at the end of this month. For those of you who want to get an early look at how the game will play and what you can expect from it, the demo will be made available this week for you to get your hands dirty. Playstation 3 users can expect the demo to be available tomorrow, while Xbox 360 users will have to wait an extra agonizing 24 hours for the demo to be available (that means Wednesday). I find myself, against all odds and expectations, strangely excited for SEGA’s newly announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2. I remember speaking to one of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1′s producers at an event just before E3 2011 while previewing Sonic Generations and making a comparative commentary between Generations and Sonic 4. Specifically, that Sonic Generations actually felt like playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game, whereas Sonic 4 was like playing a knockoff of a Sonic the Hedgehog game. “We are trying to do something a bit different with the Sonic 4 line,” was his reply (paraphrased from memory), “so it’s going to feel different.” Read the full story

I start the console, hear the familiar cry of “SEGA!” and then bliss, as I hear an updated but still recognizable Sonic theme song. I press start, and find myself returned not just to the levels of the past, but that feeling of skill and response that I developed as a child for these games. I’m in heaven.

Treasure is responsible for some of the greatest genre-defining ‘em-up games I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Radiant Silvergun was sublime. Ikaruga was a sweet, hellish nightmare…in a fantastic way. Before both of those classics became the classics they are, however, there was Guardian Heroes on the SEGA Saturn. Easily the most fun I had on a Saturn, and one of the best beat’em-ups I can recall playing in general, it has made its way to XBLA with some extra weight. Read the full story

I have very fond memories of Ulala and her dancing heroic antics in the original Space Channel 5. I had never, however, played Space Channel 5 Part 2, which was originally exclusive to the Dreamcast in Japan, until it was re-released on the PlayStation 2. The sequel was generally regarded as superior to its predecessor in terms of graphics, gameplay, game length, and more, but its limited release stunted its popularity and potential. Now, it makes its way to XBLA, and having taken the time to explore it, I can finally agree that it is, in fact, superior to its predecessor.
But is it superior…TO ITSELF? Read the full story
