Last week, we published our review for Skylanders Giants. While it felt much the same as Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure at its core, there were some key changes that help differentiate it, and it brings a new story for you to play. Just over a year ago, Activision released Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, which went on to become a certifiable cultural phenomenon. The reason for its success was twofold: a great game that could appeal to both adults and kids alike, and (perhaps more importantly) its interaction with physical collectible toys that monetized the game in an incredible way. To put it plainly, it was a game that kids and parents could legitimately enjoy together (which attracted the parents), and it was tied in with awesome collectible toys (which attracted the kids and collector-types). Now, one year later, Activision has taken Skylanders forward with Skylanders Giants, introducing a new story and new character figures. Read the full story

See what I did there? Last year, we got Skylanders, and it was good. The concept of being able to hotswap physical character models and have that reflected in-game made for a fascinating new dynamic. That, coupled with solid gameplay and good writing, allowed Skylanders to transcend from its original target audience (children who love collecting toys) and hit on an older audience as well. Next week, Skylanders Giants hits store shelves. Skylanders Giants brings with it 16 all-new characters (8 Giant Skylanders, which are twice the size of previous Skylanders) and another adventure against the evil Portal Master Kaos. I know, that’s a terrible title. We generally go for more informative titles, but I’m feeling a bit saucy and wanted to make a stupid title joke, so sue me.Let’s get to the point. Skylanders was a fantastic game for kids and adults, and has spawned an incredibly powerful addiction to little RFID toys that have resulted in sold out shelves and inflated eBay prices. Only a fool would not capitalize on that, and as you must know, Activision is not a fool. Enter: Skylanders Giants, a new game in what is now being referred to as the Skylanders franchise.
