Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II (XBLA)

The fact that I still hold out hope for Sonic titles speaks directly to just how much of an impact the original Genesis titles had on me as a lad. For two decades, I’ve played Sonic titles. Even though Mario has a more consistent track record of quality, Sonic’s high points have been bigger and better than Mario’s across the board, in my opinion. I think what I’m trying to say is that, in spite of how hard Sonic tries to make it otherwise at times, I am definitely a Sonic fan. Read the full story

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Teaser Trailer

I find myself, against all odds and expectations, strangely excited for SEGA’s newly announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2. I remember speaking to one of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1′s producers at an event just before E3 2011 while previewing Sonic Generations and making a comparative commentary between Generations and Sonic 4. Specifically, that Sonic Generations actually felt like playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game, whereas Sonic 4 was like playing a knockoff of a Sonic the Hedgehog game. “We are trying to do something a bit different with the Sonic 4 line,” was his reply (paraphrased from memory), “so it’s going to feel different.” Read the full story

Review: Rayman Origins (360)

Even now, I can still remember the first time I played Super Mario Bros. I have vivid recollections of my first time playing Sonic the Hedgehog. I will never forget my first experience with Prince of Persia. Earthworm Jim, Aladdin, and, for nostalgic reasons specific to my own life, Yo! Noid all made indelible impressions on me that will be with me until time starts erasing all of my memories. I have a particular love for platformers as one of the absolute classic gameplay elements of my life. Four days ago, I played Rayman Origins for the first time, and a new memory was born. Review: Sonic Generations (PS3)

I start the console, hear the familiar cry of “SEGA!” and then bliss, as I hear an updated but still recognizable Sonic theme song. I press start, and find myself returned not just to the levels of the past, but that feeling of skill and response that I developed as a child for these games. I’m in heaven.

Preview: Sonic Generations

During the great console wars of the 16-bit era, I proudly proclaimed myself a Sonic man (or boy, rather, given my age at the time). I sat in front of my Genesis for hours on the classic Sonic games, and even found appreciation in some of the finer modern Sonic games later on down the line. Truth be told, though, the last Sonic game I was excited about was a bit of a disappointment. I’ve kept my skepticism levels fairly high going in to Sonic Generations because of past burns (sorry, SEGA), but after yesterday afternoon, I think SEGA has returned the ball for a hat-trick home run (I don’t watch a lot of sports) with Sonic Generations. Because it’s not that I think Adam is completely wrong about everything he said in his article. It’s that I know Adam is completely wrong about everything he said in his article. A great story has the ability to elevate a great game into a great piece of art.

Product Review: AtGames Sega Arcade Motion

Recently, while filling a prescription at Walgreens, I came across an unexpected something in the toy isle.  Normally anything you find at Walgreens is going to be practically worthless, especially if it is an electronic something, but this really looked like a decent attempt at a cheap gaming alternative gift.  I had seen those crappy wanna-be “40 games” Plug & Play, All-In-One, video game toys, and very few actually look like anybody gave a shit in their creation (If you’ll pardon the French).

Review: Sonic Colors (Wii)

When Sega announced Sonic Colors, I was so excited. Unlike a lot of gamers, I really enjoyed Sonic Unleashed, since it was the first step in the right direction for the Blue Blur. Granted, that was because I had the PS3 version, which was a lot better than the Wii version (uneven amount of levels where you could play Sonic as opposed to the Werehog). In fact, every trailer for Sonic Colors has made me more and more excited to play this game. I actually was looking forward  more to this game than Sonic 4. So, has my excitement been valid?

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
