Preview: LittleBigPlanet (Vita)

Prior to this past weekend, I had never really played any of the LittleBigPlanet titles. I was always curious, of course, but for one reason or another, I never acted on that curiosity. I have now spent the last five days playing, re-playing, and creating my way through a preview version of LittleBigPlanet on my PS Vita, and I find myself eagerly anticipating its full release next month. The PlayStation Vita has been in a bit of a long-term slump since its launch, as far as its library is concerned, but E3 gave us a look at what we could expect for the rest of this year, and I think LittleBigPlanet Vita will be a strong part of that entertainment salvo. Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

When Sony announced that they’d reboot Marvel’s biggest film franchise (at least, Marvel’s biggest film franchise before The Avengers came out), fans were divided. Some thought it was a cheap cash-in, and have hoped for its failure so that the rights would revert to Marvel in order for it to be tied to the Avengers. Others have hoped for a film closer to their idea of Spidey as opposed to the Sam Raimi trilogy. Personally, I was hoping for a fresh take on the character, akin to what Christopher Nolan did with Batman. And wouldn’t you know it, I got my wish.

Review: TriOviz INFICOLOR 3D Glasses

The most recent entertainment buzzword has been “3D.” From the movie theater to the home, 3D has become more and more prevalent, with major marketing pushes across multiple demographics. Sony’s big push at last year’s E3 was 3D, introducing an entire 3D hardware package including glasses, a screen, and more. Games and movies have been pushing 3D more and more. 3D is now available on 2D screens using INFICOLOR technology, which is essentially classic red/blue (or in this case, red/green) depth 3D. TriOviz has introduced their INFICOLOR 3D glasses for bringing 3D to 2D screens for compatible games. Read the full story

Review: Dungeon Hunter: Alliance (Vita)

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance isn’t a new game. Playstation Network has had it available for nearly a year, and Mac users have had it for nearly as long. Given that, it makes judging Dungeon Hunter on Vita difficult, especially when staring at a $40 price tag. The system is screaming for an RPG, and a game in the vein of Diablo should be a no brainer. Sadly, anyone that plunks down the money for Dungeon Hunter will regret their decision very quickly. Read the full story

Review: Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Vita)

There is a lot riding on Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Not only is it from Bend Studios, the first outside of Naughty Dog to tackle the series, but it is tasked with proving that the Vita can deliver a console size experience. After three entries, there are certain cornerstones of Uncharted; namely, the wit and humor, ancient ruins, cinema quality action sequences, and mass murder. For the most part, Uncharted feels like all the others, and in some ways surpasses Uncharted 3, the weakest entry in my opinion. Shoehorning in touchscreen controls kept Golden Abyss from truly hitting console quality, although it sets an incredibly high bar for action games going forward. Read the full story

Rumor: Microsoft Goes After Used Games

Earlier this week Kotaku reported on as of yet unconfirmed rumors that the next Xbox console will lock-out used games. For many, this seemed like a dramatic and, ultimately, unfair gesture that will hamper many people’s enthusiasm and support for the next generation. Read the full story

Gaming and Giving – An Inspiration Like No Other

I’ve been gaming since around the age of five, and up until last November I thought I had achieved some of the most rewarding and inspiring moments of my gaming life: catching ‘em all the first time, vanquishing Ganon for the first time, the list goes on. But something happened over the course of 48 hours from November 19 to November 21 that easily put all of those achievements to shame and replaced the pride of succeeding and accomplishment with the pride of our medium and community making a difference. E3 2011: First Glance at the Wii U

Nintendo pulled a slightly expected fast one on the crowds of people at 2011 E3. In the chaotic mess of E3, through the thousands of people swarming around, and the hundreds of games being presented, there was new hardware being presented, only one year later after Nintendo announced their new handheld, the 3DS. The Wii U, the next generation unit from Nintendo, was announced this year to the public and it has some new tricks to go along. Nintendo has said that the hardware inside the units being shown is not final, but it is on par if not better then the current generation of hardware. The Wii U looks like a first generation Xbox 360 had a baby with a Wii. It’s a slightly curvy yet generic looking unit. It has an optical drive slot and all the usual buttons on the first of the box, but the different thing that they presented was what you play the Wii U with. Read the full story

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
