In the lead-up to Gamescom, and at Gamescom itself, trailers were being pumped out by the handful. Rather than put up a separate post for each trailer with a few sentences introducing it, I decided that this time, I’d just put all of the trailers up at once and save both me and you a shitload of time. Below, you will find trailers for Borderlands 2, Rayman Legends, Assassin’s Creed III, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Star Trek, and Rocksmith. There are definitely more trailers from the past week or so that we’ve missed, but these are some of those more relevant to my interests, which is what I know best. Read the full story

Initially, “The Most Authentic Podcast Ever,” the 32nd episode of Marooners’ Talk, was going to focus solely on the wrap-up of E3 2012. The day before we recorded, however, Tom McShea’s “interview” with Greg Goodrich on Medal of Honor Warfighter for GameSpot came to our attention. Tom McShea is a “video game journalist” holding the position of “Associate Editor” for GameSpot, a “games website.” He is also completely ignorant of what a video game is, and should feel bad. Congratulations, GameSpot: your support of Tom McShea and his style of “journalism” has earned you a coveted spot on our Beefs list, alongside such esteemed company as Kotaku and Polygon. Falling just short of Lord of the Rings in its race for the top of my geekdom list, Star Trek had an incredibly wonderful E3 2011 showing, and seems to be gearing up for an even better E3 2012 showing. While I’ve had to deal with depressingly disappointing news in the lead-up to the release of Star Trek, I’ve enjoyed everything else on the path. Today is, short of my discovering the game in a behind closed doors appointment at last year’s E3, by far the most satisfying and enjoyable Star Trek news day yet. Read the full story

Last night, as my wife and I were preparing to enter the sovereign realm of Morpheus, the anthropomorphic personification of dreams, I voiced a thought. I turned to her and said, “You know why Star Wars is definitively not science fiction? The time between the Old Republic era and the Trilogy era was what…3-6 thousand years? Why was there absolutely NO technological advancement in a period of at least three millenia? You see no progression or advancement over the course of those millenia in Star Wars. Star Trek shows you how species and cultures advance over the course of decades or centuries, while Star Wars can’t even be assed to update it by millenia!” My loving wife response to me, “Midichlorians are science,” with a troll’s glint in her eyes. First and foremost, I am a Lord of the Rings geek. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again until the day I die. If I’m ever forced to swear an undying allegiance to a single geek focus, it would be Lord of the Rings. A close second, however, would be Star Trek. I got Lord of the Rings: War in the North last year, and it was fantastic. Next year, I get Star Trek, and from everything I saw at E3 and what we’ve seen since, I have no doubts that it will be an incredibly satisfying and entertaining experience. Check out the newest teaser trailer and concept art for what may end up being my favorite game for 2013. Read the full story

I LOVE STAR TREK. I love Star Wars, but I LOVE STAR TREK. I love Firefly, but I LOVE STAR TREK. I love Stargate, but I LOVE STAR TREK. When I discovered that the Paramount appointment my darling wife Lindsey had on her schedule for last year’s E3 was primarily for a new Star Trek game, I traded her any of my appointments that she wanted to get my ass in that chair. I can’t recall which appointment I gave up to go see Star Trek, but I’ll tell you this: whatever it was, it was absolutely worth it. Do you know why? BECAUSE I LOVE STAR TREK. Read the full story

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 is a difficult game to describe. Thom took a shot and described it as Hogan’s Heroes meets Inglourious Basterds. Wait…that wasn’t very difficult at all. That pretty much nails it, actually. It’s gory, violent, and over the top like Inglourious Basters, and it’s fucking funny like Hogan’s Heroes. As a side note, I feel comfortable swearing in this because the producer presenting the game to us at E3 swore during his presentation, which makes it ok. Read the full story

I’m going to let you all in on a little secret: I love Star Trek. I’m going to let you all in on another little secret: Kirk is better than Picard. Picard has his merits, I won’t argue that. He’s #2 in the Captain rankings, after all. He’s just not Captain James Tiberius Kirk. Kirk and Spock represent one of the best dichotomous relationships in science fiction, and any media that gives me a closer look at that relationship and the world in which it exists is something to get excited about. With the announcement of the upcoming Star Trek game from Digital Extremes and Paramount Digital, I’m excited. Read the full story

Mobile technology is, quite frankly, one of the scientific advancements I am most thankful for. We are living in Star Trek (minus warp drive and sexy green women), and when I sit back and think about that, I am simply amazed at how far we have come in such a short time. Now, for the love of Trelane, science me up a new battery technology to keep my devices running longer! As I await that next leap in science, I can at least keep my mobile technology charged via alternate solutions. Read the full story
