Capcom Announces Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Edition

Capcom loves releasing fighting games. I’ll admit, I own quite a few Capcom fighting titles, but I don’t always give them the love that’s needed. Maybe it’s because I’m bad at them…one day I’d love to have a nice fight-stick to help increase my chances of winning. That being said, today Capcom has announced the limited edition Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set, coming to the USA on September 18th. This happens to be 5 days after the 25th anniversary of my birth, so I choose to believe that Capcom is releasing this collector’s set as a late birthday gift for me. One can wish, right?

Review: BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend (Vita)

Before starting up BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend, I had never played a BlazBlue title. I remember being very interested in BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger when it released back in 2009, but at the time, for whatever reason, I passed on it, and as I got farther and farther away from the release date, I simply gave it up as a lost cause and moved on. When BlazBlue: Continuum Shift was released in 2010, I found it even harder to pick up because I had never picked up Calamity Trigger, and I’m a sucker for starting a series from the top. Time went on, and BlazBlue passed from my mind; until BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend appeared on the PS Vita. Read the full story

Review: Voltron: Defender of the Universe (XBLA)

When I first heard that a Voltron game was coming to XBLA, I was pretty excited. As a kid, it was one of the staple cartoons that I would watch. What’s not to love? Giant mechanical lions piloted by space heroes, an even more giant mechanical hero that the lions transform into, and ridiculous dialogue from even more ridiculous enemies; everything you could want in a classic, as the later Power Rangers found out when ripping off Voltron’s great formula. All of this happened in the span of a few seconds, simply from hearing that a Voltron game was coming. But of course, just as every cloud holds the potential to dump torrents of water on you, every game announcement has the potential for disappointment. Mine came in hearing that Voltron would be handled by Behaviour Interactive, the same developers that gave us the inimitably terrible Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. Having spent the last couple of days playing Voltron, however, I’m glad to say that the difference between the two games is night and day. Read the full story

Review: PowerUp Heroes (Kinect)

While enjoying elementary school recess in the late 80′s, my friends and I played various games of the imagination, from X-Men to G.I. Joe, and from Super Heroes to Street Fighter. You have never known joy if you didn’t spend 30 minutes a day running around shouting, “HADOUKEN! NO… NO! SNAKE EYES CAN’T BLOCK A HADOUKEN WITH HIS NINJA POWERS, YOU BIG BUTTHEAD!” Now, Ubisoft’s PowerUp Heroes lets me combine my childhood imagination of Super Heroes and Street Fighter into something with tangible, visible results, and it does it splendidly. Gaming and Giving – An Inspiration Like No Other

I’ve been gaming since around the age of five, and up until last November I thought I had achieved some of the most rewarding and inspiring moments of my gaming life: catching ‘em all the first time, vanquishing Ganon for the first time, the list goes on. But something happened over the course of 48 hours from November 19 to November 21 that easily put all of those achievements to shame and replaced the pride of succeeding and accomplishment with the pride of our medium and community making a difference. 13 Pieces of Geek Media to Make You Proud to Be An American

I am a patriotic man at heart. I love this country I live in. Despite all its blemishes and past mistakes…hell, even some of its current mistakes…I think America is the greatest nation on Earth, created by taking in the best people on Earth. And on July fourth, we celebrate everything in America that is good and pure and explode-able in the most spectacular and flashy way possible. And so, in honor of our nation’s birth, we present a list of things that celebrate Americana in all of its ass kicking forms. Every one of these things just makes you want to hum the national anthem while slamming an apple pie down your throat, a feat which really might kill you, so don’t really try it. Read the full story

T3: Top Ten Best Video Games of All Time

Everyone has their own opinion about what video games are the best that have ever graced a console. What makes this top ten list different and totally unique is that my opinion is, in fact, the correct opinion, whereas the opinions of the past are incorrect and undeniably inferior. Actually, to call it my “opinion” is in itself misleading, as it is no mere opinion, but solid, irrefutable fact. I have spent countless hours (actually, probably only an hour or two, to be fair) carefully selecting the ten best video games of all time in order to set the record straight. Read the full story

Review: Street Fighter II the anime movie

It almost sounds like a bad joke. I mean, can you name one movie based on a video game that truly captured everything that made that game loved enough that people would want to see a film based on it? And with Capcom’s popular Street Fighter franchise, the joke just seems worse. We’ve had two Hollywood films come out that completely missed the point of the game (I prefer the one with JCVD as Guile over the chick from Smallville as Chun-Li), and then there’s the ridiculous Future Cops from Hong Kong, which makes the Hollywood films look like Oscar caliber . But then, we get a film that manages to capture everything of the games, and be awesome.

About Marooners’ Rock

Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. Society and cultural norms be damned!
